Guided by Kids Looks Forward to 2018!

Our students have been working hard to develop speaking skills, with impromptu speaking our recent focus. Next up they will be researching, writing, and giving persuasive speeches. It's great to see their confidence grow with each presentation! At our last class meeting, two of our students volunteered to give a presentation about Guided by Kids at a January Kroc Center Open House showcasing activities and programs available to students who access the Kroc Center, a very important South Omaha community activity hub.

We will be moving our class meetings to the Kroc Center for all 2018 classes, starting on Thursday evening, January 11. Since a majority of students in this year's group are from nearby, this should make transportation easier, especially during winter weather. We greatly appreciate all of the support the staff there has given us so far, especially Jill Harman, who will facilitate the presentation our students will give at the Open House, along with one of our teachers, Payton Shudak.

Since Guided by Kids also has a very important community service component, our students have decided to become actively involved in supporting the Omaha community by helping with two causes. First, we will be assisting Lutheran Family Services by furnishing apartments found for refugee and asylum families coming to Omaha. We also will help promote and support a community garden project that the Kroc Center plans to initiate for either this spring/summer or the following season.

This spring we will also begin competing at Omaha area Middle School speech tournaments, along with one informal after school debate event.
